Poland, a country in central Europe, sits at a strategic crossroads linking western Europe with the eastern Eurasian plains. Its landscape ranges from the Baltic Sea coastline in the north to vast lowland plains and the Carpathian and Sudeten mountains in the south. Warsaw, the capital, is the political and economic heart of the country, while cities such as Kraków, Gdańsk, Poznań, and Wrocław are major centers of culture, history, and trade. Poland’s past has been marked by periods of great power, foreign domination, and eventual rebirth as a sovereign state in 1918, followed by immense destruction during World War II and decades of communist rule. Since 1989, Poland has transformed into a democratic, market-based economy. It is known for its strong national identity, rich cultural traditions, and influential contributions to music, literature, and political thought. Poland is a member of the European Union, NATO, and the United Nations. The national flag features white and red horizontal bands, and the national anthem, “Mazurek Dąbrowskiego,” symbolizes resilience and independence.
