Japan
, an island country off the east coast of Asia, consists of four main islands—Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku—along with numerous smaller islands including the Ryukyu chain. Tokyo, on Honshu, serves as the national capital and one of the world’s largest cities. The country is mountainous, with active volcanoes including Mount Fuji, and its climate and abundant rainfall support lush vegetation and productive agriculture. Japan has a long history of human habitation, with recorded history beginning in the 1st century BCE. Contact with China and Korea introduced writing, Buddhism, and artistic forms, while political unification under the Yamato court led to flourishing civilizations at Nara and Kyoto. After centuries of feudal rule and relative isolation, Japan modernized rapidly in the 19th century, industrialized, and became a major world power. Following World War II, Japan experienced remarkable economic growth and is now a global leader in technology, manufacturing, and finance. Japanese culture blends ancient traditions with modern innovation. The flag symbolizes the sun, and the national anthem Kimigayo reflects continuity and unity.
