Kuwait, a small emirate on the northwestern Persian Gulf, combines a desert landscape with the bustling urban life of Kuwait City, its capital and commercial hub. Founded as a trading post by Bedouins in the 18th century, Kuwait has grown into a modern metropolis powered largely by oil wealth. The country is a constitutional monarchy led by the Āl Ṣabāḥ family, with a highly urbanized population and one of the world’s highest per capita incomes. Arabic is the official language, Islam is the predominant religion, and expatriates, mainly from South and Southeast Asia, form a majority of the population.
