Iraq News: Featured Insight

Iraq (officially the Republic of Iraq) is a country of southwestern Asia whose ancient lands were known as Mesopotamia (“Land Between the Rivers”), a region that fostered some of the world’s earliest civilizations, including Sumer, Akkad, Babylon, and Assyria. Its capital is Baghdad, which became the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate in the 8th century. The modern nation-state of Iraq was created after World War I from the former Ottoman provinces of Baghdad, Basra, and Mosul. Iraq’s terrain includes central and southeastern alluvial plains linked to the Tigris–Euphrates river system, deserts in the west and south, and highlands in the northeast.
