Germany
, a country in north-central Europe, features diverse landscapes ranging from the towering Alps in the south to the forested Central Uplands and the expansive North German Plain. Berlin, the nation’s capital, is a major cultural, political, and economic center, while cities such as Munich, Hamburg, and Frankfurt serve as hubs of industry, commerce, and finance. Germany’s history as a unified nation began in 1871 under Otto von Bismarck, experienced division during the Cold War into East and West Germany, and was reunified in 1990. The country is known for its technological innovation, rich cultural heritage including classical music and philosophy, and strong industrial base. Major rivers include the Rhine, Elbe, Danube, and Weser, supporting both transportation and agriculture. Germany is a member of the European Union, NATO, and the United Nations. The national flag features black, red, and gold horizontal stripes, and the national anthem, “Deutschlandlied” (“The Song of the Germans”), represents unity and democratic values.
