The Netherlands, a country in northwestern Europe, is characterized by its flat low-lying terrain, extensive canal systems, and large areas of reclaimed land known as polders. Amsterdam, the official capital, is a major cultural and financial center, while The Hague serves as the seat of government and hosts key international institutions. The country has a long history shaped by maritime trade, colonial expansion during the Dutch Golden Age, and a strong tradition of liberal values and social tolerance. The Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt rivers play a crucial role in transportation, agriculture, and water management. The Netherlands is known for its advanced infrastructure, innovation-driven economy, and leadership in international law and diplomacy. It is a constitutional monarchy and an active member of the European Union, NATO, and the United Nations. The national flag consists of horizontal red, white, and blue stripes, and the national anthem, “Wilhelmus,” is one of the oldest national anthems in the world.
