Turkey News: Featured Insight

Turkey, officially known as Türkiye, is a transcontinental country located partly in southeastern Europe and mostly in western Asia. It occupies a strategic position at the crossroads of the Balkans, Caucasus, Middle East, and eastern Mediterranean. Ankara is the capital city, while Istanbul—spanning both Europe and Asia—is the country’s largest city and main cultural, commercial, and historical center. Turkey’s geography is largely mountainous, dominated by the Pontic Mountains in the north, the Taurus Mountains in the south, and the Anatolian Plateau in the interior. Major rivers such as the Euphrates and Tigris originate in eastern Turkey, while fertile plains like the Adana and Aegean valleys support agriculture. Historically, Turkey was the heart of the Ottoman Empire, which reached its height in the 17th century. Following the empire’s collapse, the modern Republic of Turkey was established in 1923 under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as a secular, nationalist state. Turkey is known for its rich cultural heritage blending Asian and European influences, strategic control of the Turkish Straits, and its significant role in regional and international affairs. The national flag features a white star and crescent on a red background, symbolizing independence and national identity.
