Taiwan News: Featured Insight

Taiwan is an island in the western Pacific Ocean, located about 160 km off the southeastern coast of China, with rugged mountains dominating its interior and fertile plains along the west. Taipei, the capital in the north, is the political, economic, and cultural center of the Republic of China (ROC). Taiwan’s history reflects layers of Indigenous settlement, European contact, Qing rule, Japanese colonization, and its post–World War II separation from mainland China. The island has developed into a highly industrialized, export-driven economy, playing a vital global role in advanced manufacturing and technology, particularly semiconductors. Taiwan is known for its democratic governance, vibrant civil society, and blend of traditional Chinese heritage with Indigenous cultures. Despite its limited formal diplomatic recognition, Taiwan maintains strong economic and cultural ties worldwide. The national flag features a red field with a blue canton bearing a white sun, symbolizing democracy and unity.
