Saudi Arabia News: Featured Insight

Saudi Arabia , an arid and sparsely populated kingdom of the Middle East, is one of the world’s largest oil-producing countries. Ruled by the Saud family, the country’s governance is deeply influenced by the conservative Wahhābī Islamic movement. The de facto ruler is Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, acting on behalf of King Salman. The kingdom’s western highlands along the Red Sea, known as the Hejaz, host Islam’s holiest cities, Mecca and Medina, while the central plateau of Najd has historically been home to nomadic tribes. Eastern regions along the Persian Gulf contain vast oil fields, which since the 1960s have fueled immense wealth and modernization. Major cities include Riyadh (the capital), Jeddah, Mecca, and Medina. Saudi Arabia occupies about four-fifths of the Arabian Peninsula, featuring landscapes such as the Rubʿ al-Khalī (“Empty Quarter”) desert, the Al-Nafūd sands, the Ṭuwayq Mountains, and scattered highlands. The climate is primarily desert, with limited rainfall, extreme summer heat, and cooler winters in the highlands. The national flag displays the Islamic declaration of faith on a green field with a sword, and the national anthem, “AIndonesia ṣ-Ṣalāh al-Malikī” (“The Royal Salute”), represents national pride and unity.
