Algerian Political Parties Criticized for “Political Bankruptcy” Ahead of Elections

Several Algerian political parties are facing sharp criticism for what analysts describe as “political bankruptcy,” according to a report by the Algeria Press Service (APS) on 30 November 2025. The warning comes as the country approaches legislative and local elections, highlighting concerns that some parties are prioritizing rhetoric and populist tactics over concrete policy programs.

The APS report underscores that certain parties have increasingly relied on demagoguery while ignoring judicial rulings, particularly on issues like hate speech. Despite previously supporting relevant laws in Parliament, these parties now appear to selectively comply, undermining legal norms and public trust in the justice system.

Interference in Foreign Policy

One of the most alarming trends noted by APS involves attempts by political parties to encroach upon Algeria’s international positions, an area constitutionally reserved for the President. The report emphasizes that such interference violates national law and disrupts the coherent execution of Algeria’s foreign policy. APS described these actions as morally deviant, highlighting the risk of weakening the integrity of Algeria’s governance institutions.

Threats to Political Ethics and Democratic Processes

APS further warns that these strategies, if unchecked, could foster conflict and discord among citizens, eroding confidence in democratic processes. Analysts point out that returning to clientelism and regionalism—practices officially eliminated since 2019—remains a serious risk if parties continue to prioritize populist gains over substantive policy.

Critics argue that political parties must focus on developing clear, actionable platforms that address citizens’ needs rather than exploiting emotions or leveraging sensationalist rhetoric. APS emphasizes that meaningful engagement with voters, transparency in policy, and respect for judicial and constitutional norms are essential to restoring public trust.

The Need for Reform and Accountability

As Algeria prepares for upcoming elections, observers note the importance of internal party reform and greater accountability. Political analysts suggest that parties demonstrating genuine policy commitment and adherence to democratic principles will be better positioned to earn public support, while those clinging to empty slogans risk further reputational damage.

The APS report serves as a timely reminder that the strength of Algeria’s democratic institutions depends not only on electoral processes but also on the ethical conduct and programmatic substance of its political parties.
