Queensland’s former Police Union president and cross-border commissioner, Ian Leavers, has passed away at his Brisbane home at age 57. Authorities confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious, and investigations are ongoing. Ian Leavers’ Career in Law Enforcement
Ian Leavers joined the Queensland Police in 1989, serving in multiple divisions, including the criminal investigation branch and the child investigation unit. In 2009, he became general president and CEO of the Queensland Police Union. Later, in 2021, he was elected president of the Police Federation of Australia, holding both roles until his resignation in 2024.
Leavers also served as Queensland’s first cross-border commissioner starting in August 2024, focusing on regional crime and responses to natural disasters. Former Premier Steven Miles highlighted his frontline experience and collaborative approach as key to the role’s success.
Tributes to Ian Leavers
Queensland Police Union president Shane Prior described Leavers as a mentor and “force of nature,” praising his compassion during events like the Wieambilla tragedy. Police Minister Dan Purdie called him a passionate and fearless advocate who always stood up for what was right.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli remembered Leavers as “dedicated, principled, and driven to make a difference,” highlighting his leadership during the state’s most challenging events. Nationals Leader David Littleproud praised his contributions to developing a national firearms register and his support for both police officers and the wider community.
The Police Federation of Australia recognized Leavers as a “champion for providing a safe working environment for police and the community,” noting his enduring impact on advocacy and leadership.
