Report Highlights Major Growth in Women’s Sports

The report, titled “It’s Time: Leading the Next Era of Growth,” reveals a surge in fan engagement, sponsorship, and investment across multiple women’s leagues. Among the fastest-growing are the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) and the Northern Super League (NSL) for soccer.

In a major milestone for Canadian women’s athletics, the Toronto Tempo will join the WNBA next year, expanding professional opportunities and strengthening the national women’s sports landscape.

Expansion Plans Across Leagues

The PWHL plans to grow from six to eight teams in its upcoming season, beginning November 21, reflecting the rising demand for women’s professional hockey. Meanwhile, the NSL expects to add another club by 2027, signaling continued investment and long-term stability.

The study also included sponsorship and audience data from Olympic women’s sports and premier tournaments such as the CPKC Women’s Open and the National Bank Open.

Sponsorships and Media Rights Fuel Future Growth

Allison Sandmeyer-Graves, CEO of Canadian Women and Sport, said that while start-up capital drove early expansion, sponsorships, game-day income, and media rights will power the next wave of growth.

Conducted in collaboration with Canadian Tire Corporation and Wasserman’s The Collective, the report surveyed over 6,000 Canadians and included input from key industry stakeholders.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for brands to shape the future and capture the upside,” Sandmeyer-Graves emphasized.

The Future of Canada’s Women’s Pro Sports Market

With its rapidly expanding fan base, rising corporate investment, and growing media visibility, the Canada women’s pro sports market represents one of the nation’s most dynamic business frontiers.

As teams and leagues continue to flourish, the momentum could redefine the future of professional sports and gender equity in Canada.
