Lula and Trump Discuss Tariffs and Trade Cooperation
Brazil is on the brink of sealing a major trade agreement with the United States, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva confirmed after meeting President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit.
The leaders reportedly discussed ways to resolve the 50% tariff Washington imposed on Brazilian exports in July 2025, a move that strained relations amid lingering political tensions tied to former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Lula Calls Meeting “Very Positive”
Lula described his meeting with Trump as “very positive”, adding that both sides are committed to reaching an agreement soon. He presented Trump with a document arguing that the tariff decision had been based on “mistaken information.”
“President Trump assured me we will find a solution very soon,” Lula said, emphasizing his optimism about restoring normal trade flows.
Trump echoed that sentiment, telling reporters that “Brazil would like to do a deal” and expressing confidence that a resolution is within reach.
Brazil’s Foreign Minister Confirms Progress
Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira called the talks productive, confirming that formal bilateral negotiations will begin in the coming days. The prospective Brazil–U.S. trade deal is expected to ease months of economic friction and rekindle cooperation between the two largest economies in the Western Hemisphere.
Lula also stressed that Bolsonaro’s ongoing legal issues should not interfere with trade policy, saying, “Bolsonaro is part of the past now in Brazilian history.”

The potential Brazil US trade deal could mark a turning point in bilateral relations, signaling renewed economic engagement after years of tension.
